STAMFORD, Conn., Dec. 2, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, Charter Communications (NASDAQ: CHTR) announced the launch of its first national philanthropic initiative, Charter our Community, a program that will seek to improve 25,000 homes in the Charter footprint by 2020. The program is designed to impact 10 percent of the 250,000 low-income families in Charter communities living in homes deemed unsafe and unhealthy by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), a figure that totals 2.6 million nationwide. For these homeowners, making even simple repairs to enhance their home's safety and stability is a significant struggle. Charter our Community will combat this by providing a combination of information, resources and volunteer support to ensure that more Americans have the ability to live in safe and healthy homes.
"At Charter, we know the importance of home and believe it is critical to enhance home safety within the communities in which we live and work," said Tom Rutledge, president and CEO of Charter. "Through Charter our Community we'll strengthen and improve communities, using our network and philanthropic partners to educate, empower and support our customers and the public to maintain safe and healthy homes. Through volunteering our time and support, we hope to inspire others to join our mission by learning more and getting involved in their communities."
Charter our Community will collaborate with Rebuilding Together, a nonprofit organization that mobilizes volunteers and communities to improve the homes and lives of low-income homeowners across the United States. The program aims to improve homes through a variety of endeavors including home renovations, homeowner education initiatives and the distribution of needed home health and safety supports.
"Through our partnership with Charter Communications, Rebuilding Together is able to provide even more families across the United States with much needed homeowner education and critical repairs, creating a lasting impact on communities and lives," said Charley Shimanski, president and CEO of Rebuilding Together. "We are thrilled that Charter shares our belief that everyone deserves to live in a safe and healthy home, and are excited to grow the program in new and impactful ways."
Charter our Community will be anchored by an online hub that will feature inspirational stories of impact and in the coming months, homeowner resources, education and activities that will help people maintain safe and healthy homes.
