Charter Communications Selects N2 Broadband's OpenStream to Power On-Demand Services
ATLANTA, Oct. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- N2 Broadband Inc., the leading provider of scalable, open-standard solutions for on-demand entertainment, today announced that Charter Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq: CHTR), among the nation's largest broadband communications companies, has deployed N2 Broadband's OpenStream(R) platform to power its on-demand content deployments in Charter's Allendale, Michigan market. N2 Broadband's OpenStream is the leading, open digital services platform that enables cable operators to quickly and confidently offer on-demand services such as video on demand.
"Open-standards-based solutions, such as N2's OpenStream, are an obvious choice for operators with broad deployment plans," said Wayne Davis, Charter's Executive Vice President of Engineering and Chief Technical Officer. "N2's open platform allows us to quickly leverage the latest technologies, reducing integration complexity and enabling us to focus on offering innovative solutions to Charter's digital customers."
"After deploying the OpenStream platform we experienced an increase in reliability and performance of our VOD platform," added Pragash Pillai, Charter Vice President of Advanced Engineering for Digital Video. "N2 has ensured that the integration has gone smoothly and we are extremely pleased with the flexibility of the platform."
The OpenStream platform has been widely deployed in the North American cable market since its introduction two years ago and has recently been made available in Europe. The platform currently delivers on-demand streams to more than 60 markets reaching over 15 million digital subscribers. Top five operators who have publicly announced large-scale deployments of the OpenStream platform include Time Warner Cable and Adelphia. OpenStream was also selected as the platform of choice for the small to mid size market by National Cable Television Cooperative (NCTC), which represents over 1,000 independent cable operators serving more than 14 million subscribers nationwide.
"Charter's choice is the latest example of OpenStream's rapid adoption by the top cable operators nationwide," said Reggie Bradford, president and chief executive officer of N2 Broadband. "Our customers want open-standards-based solutions to prevent 'lock-in' by proprietary systems so they can meet evolving market needs quickly and confidently."
N2 Broadband's OpenStream platform allows cable operators to easily deploy on-demand services using VOD servers, applications, billing systems, and other system components of their choice. OpenStream's unique, open architecture extends the cable headend beyond VOD to support television's next generation of interactive services.
