Charter High Definition Service Debuts in Five Markets

ST. LOUIS, May 29, 2002 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Charter Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq:CHTR) today launched its Charter High Definition Service in five markets, enabling customers with high-definition televisions (HDTV) to receive HD programming from their local cable system. The five markets are Alhambra/Pasadena and Glendale/Burbank, Calif.; University Park/Highland Park, Texas; Miami Beach, Fla.; and Birmingham, Ala.

"With more and more consumers buying HDTV sets, Charter can help customers maximize their investment and realize its full value by providing high-quality, high-definition programming and equipment," said John Pietri, Charter senior vice president of Engineering. "Charter High Definition Service provides customers a brilliant and colorful video experience that is unmatched by anything ever before available. You won't believe what you'll see!"

Charter customers who sign up for the HDTV service will be enabled technically to receive dedicated HDTV programming from HBO and Showtime. HDTV programming from the local network affiliates will be added shortly, Mr. Pietri said.

"As HDTV gains momentum, more programs will be made available in the high-definition format," Mr. Pietri said. "When you combine HDTV technology with Charter's advanced hybrid fiber-coax infrastructure, you have a winning combination that truly demonstrates the power of broadband."

Mr. Pietri said the five markets where Charter launched HDTV service today are built on Scientific Atlanta platforms. Customers subscribing to Charter High Definition Service will pay a monthly fee for use of a Scientific-Atlanta Explorer 3100HD digital set-top.

Mr. Pietri said the company is on schedule with previously announced plans to initiate Charter High Definition Service in the third quarter of this year in Kalamazoo, Mich. and St. Louis. Because these markets are built on Motorola platforms, the Motorola DCT-5100 will be used to deliver HD service.
