Charter Teams Up with nCUBE for VOD Launches
"This agreement with nCUBE builds on our strategy of working with multiple vendors while also delivering state-of-the-art entertainment to our customers," said Carl Vogel, Charter president and CEO. "We look forward to working with nCUBE as we deliver and grow this exciting new service that provides a convenient and affordable alternative to video rental stores and gives us a strong competitive advantage over satellite providers."
"Charter has long been recognized for its foresight as it builds a television offering for its consumers that is both compelling and competitive," said Michael Pohl, nCUBE CEO and president. "It's an exciting time in the United States to see VOD coming to market. By deploying this robust on-demand solution, we are confident that Charter remains in that strong competitive position for today as well as tomorrow."
Mr. Vogel said Charter has been working with both nCUBE and Concurrent Computer Corp. (Nasdaq: CCUR) for the past several months in the event Charter's original video-on-demand provider, DIVA, could not continue to deliver VOD services.
Mr. Vogel said Charter has already installed and tested nCUBE VOD equipment in the markets where the company has been offering VOD service on the Scientific-Atlanta platform and also plans to launch nCUBE on the Motorola platform later this year. The company has installed nCUBE's equipment in the following markets: Birmingham, Ala.; Fort Worth, Texas; Newtown, Conn.; and Glendale, Long Beach, and Pasadena, Calif.
Under its agreement with Charter, nCUBE will provide Charter with its full suite of On-Demand solutions for VOD, including the nABLE On-Demand Management System, nODA, which allows operators to customize the user guides as well as nCUBE's n4 and enhanced n4x servers. nCUBE's On-Demand Platform provides operators a complete, easy-to-use solution for delivering on-demand content with the scalability to support the future of everything-on-demand (EOD).
Charter previously announced it is using Concurrent equipment in the markets where it provides Video-on-Demand service over the Motorola platform. Charter has installed and tested Concurrent VOD equipment in Asheville, N.C.; Duluth, Ga.; Greenville/Spartanburg, S.C.; Hickory, N.C.; Slidell, La.; and St. Louis, Mo.
